Want to stand taller and feel more confident? Fire up your core

One of my regular one to one clients commented during our weekly session about how much she loved the yoga practice I had created for her the week before. We do something different each week and this session had focused a lot on core strength, with a few pilates practices sprinkled in. Whilst it was challenging for her to do at the time, she said that when she went home after the class, she felt amazing. I know exactly what she means.

Looking at this from a physiological perspective, the core is your powerhouse and when it’s toned and strong, you move better, your posture is better. You feel stronger. Taller. More confident and generally ‘together’. Your body feels more integrated and you feel energised.

Yoga helps to shift energy around the body and balance us, which is one reason why we feel so good afterwards. From an energetic perspective, core practices target the solar plexus region which is located from the bottom of the breastbone to the navel area.

According to yoga philosophy, the solar plexus is the area in the body associated with your sense of self, your personal identity and agency, self-worth and self-confidence. It’s where the manipura chakra is located and when this chakra is balanced you feel really energised and literally fired up to be successful at anything that life throws at you.

It’s easy to skip some of the core focused postures in yoga because they are a little bit challenging, but the benefits you see from incorporating them into a practice are immediately evident.

Whether you are coming to yoga/pilates, yoga for men, hatha, vinyasa or my new gentle yoga classes, every session I create incorporates lots of different postures that emphasise core strength. Here are some good core practices that I regularly include in my classes:

  • Bridge pose and slow counting with breath

  • Yogic bicycles

  • Navasana the boat pose

  • Tadaka Mudra or pond pose.

Check out my weekly timetable for the many different class options and I look forward to seeing you on the mat very soon.
